Title: Circular Economy Business Models - An Introduction

Abstract: The circular economy concept holds immense promise for creating a sustainable world but presents significant challenges due to its complexity and multifaceted nature. Understanding, adapting, and implementing circular economy principles is a daunting task for many, particularly as it requires balancing sustainability with profitability. Despite the inherent difficulties in understanding and adapting to circular principles, a diverse range of firms, including startups and established companies, have successfully developed and integrated circular value propositions and business models. This study delves into over 170 business models implemented in practice, aiming to demystify the process for managers. These models are classified into five main circularity challenges and seven solution archetypes, contextualized according to the specific conditions of their application. By developing synthesized frameworks and actionable blueprints for each scenario, the study provides a comprehensive account that helps managers understand an extensive spectrum of circular practices and select the most suitable ones for their specific context. The ultimate goal is to facilitate a smoother transition to circular business models, enabling companies to navigate the complexities of the circular economy while maintaining profitability and contributing to a more sustainable world.

Bio: Alptegin Albayraktaroglu is an Assistant Professor of Strategy and Innovation at the Faculty of Business at Ozyegin University. His research focuses on the implementation of new business models (BMs) in established organizations: the internal and external conditions that enable an effective execution process for new BMs in firms across various sizes and industries. The insights gained are disseminated through scientific publications, practice sessions, and consulting activities. He is currently exploring the implementation of circular economy business models.faction, but negatively related to social satisfaction.
